According to the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the global surface temperature has increased by 1.0&deg;C and will likely rise further by 1.10 &deg;C to 6.40&deg;C<a href="#accordion">[1]</a>. The annual average near-surface global temperature is expected to be higher than 1.5&deg;C above pre-industrial levels between 2023-2027. Although this is likely to be on a temporary basis, the next five years are 98% more likely to be the warmest on record[2]. As per Professor Petteri Taalas, World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Secretary-General, a warming El Ni&ntilde;o is set to push global temperatures further into dangerous levels.

While El Ni&ntilde;o sounds like the name of a Spanish wrestler, it is far more dangerous than any takedown you may have seen.

Understanding the El Niño and its impact on Pakistan

In the 1600s, fishermen off the coast of Peru noticed unusually warm water in the Pacific Ocean, around Christmas time<a href="#accordion">[3]</a>. The phenomenon soon became known as El Ni&ntilde;o.

El Ni&ntilde;o is a naturally occurring climate pattern characterized by warmer than normal sea surface temperatures in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. Although El Ni&ntilde;o was initially used to describe warmer ocean temperatures, it now refers to a more complex climate phenomenon called the El Ni&ntilde;o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The terms El Ni&ntilde;o and ENSO are often used interchangeably<a href="#accordion">[4]</a>.

El Ni&ntilde;o and La Ni&ntilde;a are two opposite phases of the El Ni&ntilde;o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) climate pattern. This leads to a decrease in the upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich water from the deeper ocean to the surface along the western coast of South America. As a result, warm surface waters spread eastward toward the coast of South America.

Although these wet conditions continued in Balochistan for a while, by March 1998, the province experienced one of its worst droughts in 50 years. These include Australia, Brazil, Nigeria, South Africa, and the Philippines<a href="#accordion">[7]</a>.

Between 2020 and 2022, there were three consecutive La Ni&ntilde;a episodes, which has only ever happened twice since 1950<a href="#accordion">[9]</a>. While this did prevent global temperatures from rising too high, 2022 was still recorded as the fifth warmest year<a href="#accordion">[5]</a>. We all were very quick when it came to memes and jokes about Greta Thunberg and COVID.

You must be wondering how those two are connected.

Well, while we have only ever focused on the cons of <a href="https://merisehat.pk/disease/covid-19">COVID</a>, there were some pros too. Not related to the disease itself but instead these pros had more to do with the fact that most of the world&rsquo;s population stopped going out. If you are old enough to read, you are probably smart enough to tell by now that the biggest issue with this world is the humans themselves. We have a pattern where one generation absolutely butchers something, then another generation whines about the butchery and a generation after that has to give in to slavery to undo that damage. Right now, we are the third generation for which things are so bad that we need to care about the climate unlike the GenX or baby boomers who will realistically die very soon and probably do not have much to live for in any way. 
&nbsp;

With all of this and 2020 in mind, we realized that the grass was greener on all sides, air was fresh, animals were happy, it felt like Zootopia but in 8k. Why did this happen? Well, we stopped going out simply. As soon as 2023 hit, we got slapped with the reality of the scarcity of our natural resources making everything so expensive that petrol feels like a luxury.
