Some reasons people get tattoos are artistic expression, religious or cultural reasons, sentimental reasons. Nowadays, however, it&rsquo;s mostly a matter of self-expression.</p>

<p>The first modern tattoo machine was modelled after Thomas Edison&rsquo;s engraving machine. Nowadays, the most commonly used tool is an electric tattoo gun that has a single or multiple needles that deliver the pigment inside the skin.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Our skin has three layers, epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. The pigment or ink is inserted into all three layers. Why doesn&rsquo;t the skin try to expel it? <p>During the process of tattooing, the tattoo needle punctures our skin somewhere from 50 to 3,000 times. This process is called Selective Photo-thermolysis &mdash; which translates to using light to heat up ink in order to break it down.
